Question:
Do governments impose a higher tax on unhealthy food?
Answer 1
We cannot emphasize the importance of a healthy diet too much because junk food does harm our health. Some people argue that the tax on junk food should be raised so that people will choose healthy food instead. From my perspective, I'm afraid I have to disagree with this opinion.

First, the drawbacks are more than the merits if the government charges more tax on junk food, like chips, deep-fried food, etc. It is not denied that purchasing unhealthy food will go down due to this policy since the price of junk food is higher than before. Nevertheless, this policy triggers some problems at the same time. Healthy food, especially organic vegetables, is usually much more expensive than unhealthy food, and families must spend more on living expenses if they need to pay extra taxes on unhealthy food. It could be unaffordable for some low-income families.

Moreover, the tax could have a massive impact on the unhealthy food industry, leading to less sales and profits. As a result, the ...

The growth of the fast food industry has, without doubt, impacted the eating habits and the health of many societies worldwide. Diabetes, high cholesterol, heart and respiratory problems are all on the rise due to fatty and sugar-rich food. However, the question is whether higher taxes would improve this situation.

From an economic point of view, higher taxes might seem sensible. In countries such as the USA, Australia, and Britain, the healthcare system spends a large part of its budget on people with diet-related health problems. It could be argued that these people have caused their illnesses because of their choice of food. Why should they expect the state to pay for their treatment in this case? The tax could help fund the healthcare system.

However, we must also consider which socio-economic groups consume fast food as the central part of their diet. Statistics indicate that lower-income groups eat more of this food than wealthier people. One possible reason is that fast ...

Answer 3
It is undoubtedly true that people's eating habits have significantly changed over the past few years. In many countries, people frequently eat junk foods, negatively impacting their health. Therefore, while many people claim that the government should increase the taxes on restaurant foods, I believe it will not be a more effective way to curb the issue.

First, why do people argue that imposing higher taxes will benefit them? It is more likely that people, especially young children, will avoid having pizzas and burgers due to adding an extra load to their budgets. Consequently, that would be more effective in controlling the spike of digestion system-related issues. Furthermore, the restaurants will be indirectly forced to offer healthy and nutritious foods at a cheaper rate. Also, it will help promote home cooking as well.

Secondly, the other reason is the cost-effective feature of such foods over the other healthy food options. In addition, they are ready to eat or prepared in ...

Answer 4
It has been seen that people prefer junk food to healthy food. To control this malaise, some people think that the government should come forward and lay high taxes on unhealthy food so that people prioritize healthy eating. I think this way will bring benefits but also feel there are other suggestions for promoting healthy food.

To begin with, when the government levies high taxes on junk food, people hesitate to buy this kind of food in large quantities as it might upset their budget. Hence, people will be encouraged to eat healthily. Furthermore, the main reason people are shifting towards fast food is its availability. These foods can be quickly grabbed anytime, are handy, and are ready to eat. They can even order it online or from any minor and nearby stores. If the government implements this law, there will be a chance that small fast-food outlets may be unable to pay taxes to the government. Therefore, they opted for those businesses where they pay less fees.
