IELTS Writing Task Vocabulary

IELTS writing relies on your vocabulary skill, especially in academic writing test. Study shows at least 25% writing band is impacted by your vocabulary range and accuracy. So build writing vocabulary is an important job to prepare IELTS writing test.

In general, IELTS writing vocabulary should be a part of IELTS vocabulary. But, considering that the special formats of academic task 1 (a report to describe chart and/or table) and task 2 (a 250 words 4/5 paragraphs essay), some short but useful word and phrase lists are deserved to study in advance.

For example, words to describe charts, words and phrases to link sentences and paragraphs, hard words to highlight your meanings, all these will sharpen your writing after short preparing.
  1. Words to Describe Chart and Table
Academic Writing Task 1 is to write a report to describe visible objects, such as chart, map, or table. To get a high score in Task 1 writing you need to give accurate and strong description for the given diagram or table. Because this is a relatively academic assignment, accuracy is crucial to your final score, you must express your idea with right words and sentences. So we suggest test takers prepare below vocabulary exclusively for task 1 writing.

  2. Phrases to Link Sentences
IELTS Writing Task 2 will ask you to finish an essay more than 250 words. Because you just have 40 minutes to do this assignment, what you write is actually a short essay, 300 words around and with 4 or 5 paragraphs. To express your core argument and present supporting points accurately, you need words and phrases to link sentences and paragraphs together, and finally to organise your ideas as a fluent essay.   3. 100 Hard Writing Words
Task 2 essay usually is around 300 words. If you want to have a good score, you cannot use common or basic words thoroughly. Try to highlight your idea with 5-7 hard words will impress the examiners a different vocabulary skill. We prepare 100 hard words here. You may think it's too short. Writing isn't as reading.
