IELTS General Writing Task 1 - Topics:Refresh Topics
The General Writing task 1 is a letter to friend, agency, or someone else. You should finish the letter in 20 minutes with at least 150 words. High score answers usually are around 200 words. A longer letter doesn't credit your band, but spends more time.

In General Task 1 of the writing module, you will see a brief description of a question, then some instructions that should be included in your letter. Task 1's topics are common and plain, easy to deal with, like:
  • Writing to a teacher to ask a reference letter
  • Writing to a college administration about dormitory
  • Writing to a friend to introduce own new job
  • Writing to a travel agent to change your booked flight
  • Writing to a dealer to inquire goods
  • Writing to a landlord for defeat of heating system
  • Writing to a friend to attend birthday party
The key point is to make sure that each instruction should be mentioned in your letter. You have to double check to ensure nothing left. Miss or misunderstand any part of the question prompt will loss your score. Besides, right grammar, such as capitalisation and punctuation, and strong vocabulary are primary factors to get a good band.

Before writing, you should decide letter style and question type. Based on how well you know the receiver, the letter can be Formal, Semi-formal, or Informal. The letter style may impact some important elements and formats of your answer letter. This Letter Writing article shows how to handle different letter style.

The common question types in General Task 1 are as following:
  • Personal Correspondence
  • Provide Information
  • Express Needs and Wants
  • Express Opinions
Question type is just a concept to help your preparing and exercising. In fact, a Task 1 question may involve two or more types, for example, Provide Information and Express Opinions are often seen in same letter. When working for real writing test, you must apply question types flexibly.
