1 Overview of Analyze Issue Writing
In GRE writing, analyze an issue task gives one or a pair of statements on a specific topic, which should be a common topic and doesn't need specialized knowledge to understand. However, if you once prepare this topic or are familiar with it, you will save much of time. Based on the topic, there will be a set of instructions to let you address it. No matter what the topic is, what you need to do is as follows:
- Each topic usually has two sides, and there is no actual right side in the task. At first, you must decide your position that doesn't depend on real pros and cons in nature but rely on consideration of comfortable writing. The test needs a persuasive essay, not the right answer.
- Spend on 5 minutes to draft your essay, then list possible points or examples before writing.
- Explain your position on the topic. You must prove or support your view by adequate discussing or reasoning.
- Your position should be 80% in favor of one side. Full or absolute supporting on any topic is easy to lead a logic defeat. So, leave some room for the position that you discard.
- Try to use specific examples to support your points. Boring sentences have no positive effect for high score essays.
- Read instructions carefully because the questions aren't exactly as same in separate tasks. You should ensure your response meets with all the instructions.
GRE writing raters never suggest, follow, or favor any specific format, so it is your choice to write an essay that works best for you. But considering that you only have 30 minutes per task, you shouldn't try to new essay structure, format, or style.
A clever way is to duplicate what you are familiar with in GRE writing test. When practicing, you should write essays within the exam time frame. From the
GRE official site - Pool of Issue Topics, or section 3 of this page, you can select some issues to exercise. These practices help you understand how to structure an essay by instructions.
2 Format of Analyze Issue Writing
A common suggestion is to compose your analyze issue task as an introduction, a conclusion, and 3-4 middle paragraphs.
The middle paragraphs are the core of an essay that develops your reasoning with examples. If you try to shoot a high score, you need cover points that support your position, as well that challenge your position. It means you have to deal with two sides. Typically, you can put your favorite things at first, and then mention reverse ideas.
We list a general format here and suggest you make a person version in practice and preparation.
Part 1 - Introduction
Introduction is the center to analyze an issue. You should explain what the problem is in your words. Try to make it clear why the topic is controversial in straightforward and show your point of view or position. Remember that the position you take should be comfortable to write.
Part 2 - Body
Write 2-3 paragraphs to support, prove, or establish your position. Each paragraph should bring up one new point. Explain the point, show examples, and reason by logic. You can use connecting words and phrases at the beginning of each paragraph, but logic connection in nature is more important. So you have to keep logic flow smoothly.
Part 3 - Qualification
In general, GRE analyze issue task isn't a yes or no problem, so you had better leave some room for the opposite side. A usual way is to moderate your position in the last second paragraph, which explains that the other side might be correct under some scenarios.
Part 4 - Conclusion
You should summarize the essay back to the primary point of Introduction. However, you shouldn't repeat what you have said. Rephrase in a more general way and enhance what your view is and why you take this view.
More GRE essay writing tips
- The introduction and the conclusion are very general. You can prepare before exam, but the body must be specific, you can only prepare some patterns.
- Don't give multiple examples to one point, stick to the one point by one example method is a straightway.
- The examples can be from your own experience, reading, or knowledge, and the unique examples are better than generic ones.
- Good vocabulary is an asset, but don't use unknown or half-known words to pass any wrong message and confuse readers.
