Professor:Today, we’ll discuss outsourcing and corporate responsibility. Many companies move manufacturing or service jobs to countries where labor costs are lower. Supporters argue that outsourcing helps businesses reduce expenses, remain competitive, and provide lower prices for consumers. However, critics believe that companies have responsibilities to the countries and communities where they originally operate. They argue that outsourcing can lead to job losses, economic decline, and weakened local communities when businesses move work abroad mainly to reduce labor costs. What do you think? Do companies violate their obligations to local communities when they outsource work to low-wage countries? Why or why not?
Jessica:I believe companies do have responsibilities to the communities that support them. Businesses benefit from local workers, infrastructure, education systems, and government services for many years. If companies suddenly move jobs overseas only to reduce costs, local workers and communities may suffer serious economic damage. Corporations should consider social responsibility, not only profits.
Mark:In my opinion, outsourcing is a normal part of a global economy. Companies must remain competitive in international markets, and reducing production costs can help businesses survive and continue growing. If companies become uncompetitive because of high labor costs, they may eventually fail completely, which could harm workers even more. Governments should help workers adapt to economic changes rather than expect businesses to ignore global competition.
