Professor:Today, we’ll discuss the expansion of major international sporting events. The FIFA World Cup has gradually expanded from 16 teams in earlier decades to 48 teams in future tournaments. Supporters argue that expansion allows more countries to participate, increases global representation, and gives smaller football nations valuable international experience. However, critics believe the decision is driven mainly by commercial interests, such as broadcasting revenue, sponsorships, and ticket sales, rather than by concerns about athletic quality or competition. Some people also worry that too many teams could reduce the overall standard of play. What do you think? Has the expansion of the World Cup become more about business than sports? Why or why not?
Olivia:I believe the expansion is mainly motivated by commercial interests. A larger tournament creates more matches, more advertising opportunities, and greater broadcasting revenue for organizers. While global representation is important, increasing the number of teams too much may reduce the quality of competition because weaker teams may not be ready for the highest international level.
Daniel:In my opinion, expanding the World Cup is positive for international sports. Football is a global game, and more countries deserve the opportunity to participate in the world’s biggest tournament. Smaller nations can gain experience and inspire future generations of players. Even if commercial benefits exist, expansion can still help develop football worldwide.
