Professor:Today, we’ll discuss the relationship between energy prices and clean energy development. Some economists argue that high oil prices encourage governments, companies, and consumers to invest more heavily in renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and electric transportation. They believe expensive fossil fuels make alternative energy technologies more attractive and financially competitive. However, others argue that high oil prices mainly increase economic pressure on businesses and households rather than supporting long-term environmental progress. What do you think? Do high oil prices help promote the development of clean energy? Why or why not?

Natalie:I believe high oil prices can strongly encourage clean energy development. When gasoline and other fossil fuels become expensive, consumers and businesses naturally begin searching for cheaper alternatives. This increases demand for technologies such as electric vehicles and renewable energy systems. In addition, governments may invest more in clean energy research to reduce dependence on unstable oil markets. Although high energy prices can create short-term difficulties, they may also accelerate the transition toward a more sustainable economy in the long run.

Brian:Personally, I am not convinced that high oil prices necessarily benefit clean energy development. In many cases, rising energy costs create financial stress for ordinary people and businesses. Companies facing higher transportation or manufacturing expenses may actually reduce investment in new technologies because they are trying to control costs. Furthermore, some governments may increase fossil fuel production instead of supporting renewable energy in order to lower prices quickly. For these reasons, I think high oil prices alone are not enough to guarantee environmental progress.
