Question:
The professor is teaching a class on environmental policy and energy development. Write a post responding to the professor’s question.

In your response, you should:
  • Express and support your opinion.
  • Contribute to the discussion in your own words.
An effective response will contain at least 100 words.

Professor:Today, we’ll discuss the role of nuclear energy in addressing climate change. Supporters of nuclear power argue that it produces electricity with extremely low carbon emissions and should therefore be considered a form of clean energy. They believe governments should increase investment in nuclear technology to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and meet growing energy demands. However, critics point to concerns about radioactive waste, high construction costs, and the potential risks of nuclear accidents. What do you think? Should nuclear energy be treated as a clean energy source and receive greater investment and development support? Why or why not?

Grace:I believe nuclear energy should be considered a clean energy source. Unlike coal or oil, nuclear power plants produce electricity without releasing large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This makes nuclear energy an effective tool for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and slowing climate change. In addition, nuclear plants can generate stable electricity even when weather conditions are poor, which is an advantage over some renewable energy sources. Although safety concerns exist, modern nuclear technology has become much more advanced and reliable. For these reasons, I think governments should continue investing in nuclear energy development.

Michael:Personally, I do not support expanding nuclear energy. Even though nuclear plants produce low carbon emissions, the risks associated with radioactive waste and possible accidents are too serious to ignore. Nuclear disasters can cause long-term environmental and health damage that affects entire regions. Furthermore, building and maintaining nuclear facilities is extremely expensive and time-consuming. I believe governments should focus instead on safer renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power, which do not create dangerous waste materials.

Answer 1
I disagree that nuclear energy should be heavily promoted as a clean energy solution.

While nuclear plants do produce low carbon emissions, they also create radioactive waste that remains dangerous for many years. Managing this waste safely is extremely difficult and expensive. In addition, ...
