Professor:Today, we’ll discuss the relationship between environmental ethics and energy development. Some activists oppose major energy sources such as fossil fuels, nuclear power, and large hydroelectric projects because they believe these systems cause environmental damage or create long-term ecological risks. They argue that societies should reduce energy consumption and place stronger ethical limits on industrial development in order to protect nature and future generations. However, critics claim that restricting energy production too aggressively could slow economic growth, reduce living standards, and create energy shortages. What do you think? Is using environmental ethics to limit energy development and consumption a positive step for society? Why or why not?

Chloe:I believe stronger environmental ethics are necessary for modern society. Human activity has already caused serious environmental problems such as climate change, pollution, and habitat destruction. If governments and industries continue prioritizing economic growth without limits, future generations may face even greater environmental disasters. Reducing dependence on harmful energy sources and encouraging people to consume energy more responsibly could help create a healthier and more sustainable world. Although these policies may involve economic sacrifices, protecting the environment should remain a long-term priority.

Ryan:Personally, I think some environmental movements go too far in opposing energy development. Modern societies depend heavily on reliable energy for transportation, healthcare, manufacturing, and communication. Limiting fossil fuels, nuclear energy, and hydropower at the same time could make electricity more expensive and reduce economic opportunities, especially in developing countries. Instead of restricting energy use, I believe governments should focus on improving technology so energy production becomes cleaner and more efficient without harming economic growth.
