Professor:Today, we’ll discuss the role of military alliances and foreign troop deployments. The United States currently maintains military forces in several regions considered global hotspots, including countries such as South Korea. Supporters of these deployments argue that they help deter aggression and maintain regional stability. However, critics believe that a large U.S. military presence may increase tensions and raise the risk of conflict by encouraging rivalry between major powers or provoking hostile reactions from neighboring countries. Some people therefore argue that reducing U.S. troop deployments in these regions could lower the chances of war. What do you think? Should the United States reduce its troop presence in global hotspots? Why or why not?
Claire:I believe the United States should reduce its military presence in regions such as South Korea. Foreign troop deployments can increase political tension because neighboring countries may view them as threats or attempts to expand influence. If the U.S. reduced its military footprint, regional powers might rely more on diplomacy and local cooperation instead of military competition.
David:In my opinion, the United States should maintain its troop presence in important regions. U.S. forces help discourage military aggression and reassure allies that they will receive support during crises. Without this deterrence, some countries might become more aggressive, which could actually increase instability and the risk of conflict.
