Professor:Today, we’ll discuss the search for extraterrestrial civilizations. For decades, scientists have used telescopes and radio signals to search for intelligent life beyond Earth. Recently, however, some researchers have argued that humanity should be cautious about actively sending messages into space to attract the attention of extraterrestrial civilizations. They worry that contacting unknown civilizations could create risks if those civilizations are hostile or technologically far more advanced than humans. Others believe that actively searching for and communicating with extraterrestrial life is important for scientific progress and could help humanity better understand its place in the universe. What do you think? Should scientists actively try to contact extraterrestrial civilizations? Why or why not?

Rachel:I believe scientists should be careful about actively contacting extraterrestrial civilizations. Humanity knows almost nothing about what kinds of intelligent life may exist in space. If an advanced civilization received our messages, we could unintentionally expose ourselves to danger. Throughout human history, encounters between societies with very different levels of technology often harmed the weaker group. For this reason, it may be safer to continue observing space without drawing attention to ourselves.

Kevin:In my opinion, scientists should continue trying to contact extraterrestrial civilizations. Curiosity and exploration are natural parts of human progress. If intelligent life exists elsewhere, communicating with it could lead to extraordinary scientific discoveries and perhaps even international cooperation beyond Earth. In addition, the universe is so vast that the chances of immediate danger are probably very small. Avoiding contact because of fear may prevent humanity from making one of the greatest discoveries in history.
