The professor is teaching a class on technology and employment. Write a post responding to the professor’s question.
In your response, you should:
- Express and support your opinion.
- Contribute to the discussion in your own words.

Professor:Today, we’ll discuss how artificial intelligence may affect employment in the future. Some experts predict that AI systems and robots will eventually perform certain practical tasks, such as driving vehicles or preparing food, more efficiently and safely than humans. As these technologies improve, companies may prefer automated systems over human workers. Critics argue that this trend will permanently eliminate many jobs and make it harder for workers to find employment in affected industries. Others believe new forms of work will emerge as technology advances. What do you think? Will AI permanently reduce job opportunities in areas such as transportation and food service? Why or why not?
Rachel:I believe AI will permanently reduce employment in some industries. For example, self-driving vehicles may eventually replace taxi and truck drivers because companies can save money by using automated systems that operate continuously without rest. Similarly, restaurants may increasingly rely on robotic cooking systems to improve speed and consistency. As a result, many workers with limited education or technical skills could struggle to find new jobs. In my opinion, governments should invest in retraining programs so workers can prepare for careers that are less likely to be replaced by AI technology.
Kevin:Personally, I do not think AI will destroy jobs permanently. Throughout history, technological advances have changed the nature of work, but they have also created new industries and employment opportunities. Even if AI handles repetitive tasks such as driving or cooking, humans will still be needed to supervise systems, maintain equipment, and provide customer service. In addition, many people may continue to prefer human interaction in restaurants or transportation services. Therefore, I think AI will transform jobs rather than eliminate them completely.
