However, critics point out that tariffs often increase prices for consumers because imported products become more expensive. Some economists also argue that tariffs can reduce competition and hurt economic efficiency in the long term. What do you think? Are tariffs beneficial despite the higher costs for consumers? Why or why not?

Linda:I believe tariffs can be beneficial because protecting local industries and jobs is extremely important for a country’s long-term economic stability. If domestic businesses cannot compete with cheaper imports, factories may close and workers may lose their jobs. Although consumers may pay slightly higher prices, supporting local production can strengthen the national economy and reduce dependence on foreign countries.

Kevin:In my opinion, tariffs usually create more problems than benefits. Higher import taxes increase prices for consumers and businesses that rely on foreign products or materials. In addition, reduced competition may make domestic companies less innovative and less efficient over time. Instead of tariffs, governments should support workers through education and economic reform.
