Professor:Today, we’ll discuss whether governments should place higher taxes on unhealthy products such as sugary drinks and junk food. Supporters argue that these taxes can reduce unhealthy eating habits and encourage people to make better lifestyle choices. They also believe the additional tax revenue can help fund healthcare programs. However, critics claim that such taxes unfairly limit personal freedom and place a greater financial burden on low-income families. What do you think? Should governments tax unhealthy food and drinks? Why or why not?
Sarah:I believe governments should tax unhealthy products because they can seriously harm public health. Sugary drinks and junk food contribute to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, which increase healthcare costs for society. If these products become more expensive, people may reduce their consumption and choose healthier alternatives instead. In addition, governments can use the tax revenue to support nutrition education and medical services. Overall, I think these taxes would encourage healthier lifestyles and benefit society in the long term.
David:I disagree because I think people should have the freedom to decide what they eat without government interference. Taxing unhealthy food may also unfairly affect low-income individuals who rely on inexpensive meals. Furthermore, there is no guarantee that people will change their eating habits simply because prices increase. Instead of imposing taxes, governments should focus on educating citizens about healthy lifestyles and improving access to affordable nutritious food.
